Global Warming

SIGN THE PETITION ASKING GOVERNOR GRANHOLM TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING!

Global Warming is already affecting Michigan in many ways, and the threat is growing.  But our state is far behind many of other states when it comes to controling our contributions of greenhouse gases that threaten our children's future.  Even though slow progress is being made, our Michigan leaders must be convinced to move faster and smarter to prevent worse damage to the planet.

Governor Jennifer Granholm has made strong commitments to move Michigan forward in the fight against global warming, but there is more that she can and must do.  She has signed agreements with other Governors, created a Climate Action Council to develop policy recommendations at the end of 2008, and been a strong advocate throughout Michigan for getting renewable energy requirements in place to both protect the environment and build Michigan's economy.

But with now 8 proposed coal fired power plants being proposed in Michigan today, and the strong likelihood that some of these could be approved for air pollution permits in 2008, Governor Granholm must be urged to do more.  Even just one of the three largest coal plants proposed here could entirely wipe out any reductions in greenhouse gases achieved if Michigan passes the proposed renewable portfolio standards and energy efficiency requirements included in the energy package passed out the Michigan House of Representatives in April.

Governor Granholm can guarantee that Michigan will not allow any new or expanded power plants to be approved until and unless Michigan requires that carbon dioxide emissions from these facilities are eliminated.  The Governor of Kansas, Kathleen Sebelius, took action in 2007 to fight global warming by regulating carbon dioxide, blocking two large coal fired power plants proposed there. Michigan deserves at least the same leadership as Kansas has seen!

Ask Governor Granholm to take steps now, before any coal plants are approved, to assure that Michigan is regulating carbon dioxide.  Sign the on-line petition Sierra Club and our partners at Clean Energy NOW have posted at www.michigancleanenergynow.com
